New Central Library | Helsinky
The creation of an open and permeable public space, capable of becoming an urban landmark as well as a cultural symbol of the entire country, was the key concern of the international competition for the new Helsinky library. The project required to unite symbolic elements linked to Finnish nature with formal and functional solutions of a rational and contemporary language. The architectural body was conceived as a stereometric object to be accessed through a full-height crevasse, which at the same time defines the connection point of the city and the main distribution space of the building. Within the urban design it was attemped to create a city-library climax and vice versa, in order to give the visitor a progressive and gradual experience of the building volumes.
